The Senior Laboratory Manager for bacteriology assays will lead a team in the development, optimization, qualification, validation, and execution of bacteriological assays. Platforms include serum bactericidal assays (SBA’s) using both Human Complement (HC) and Baby Rabbit Complement (BR), supporting vaccine trials from Phase I to Phase IV. Responsibilities include ensuring data quality and compliance, providing scientific oversight, advancing method development, and evaluating technologies to enhance assay precision, throughput, and quality. The Senior Lab Manager will also contribute scientific insights, ensure thorough and standards-aligned documentation, and maintain adherence to quality and safety guidelines.
Main Responsibilities:
Laboratory Operations
Plans and oversees the day-to-day operations and general activities (with leadership guidance) associated with one or more laboratories/projects.
Ensures laboratory resources (materials/reagents/equipment/facilities) are maintained to meet assigned objectives.
Supports a quality and compliant testing environment (laboratories, equipment, reagents, training and documentation, methods, personnel).
Maintains alignment of processes and procedures and shares best practices within the team/platform.
Supervision and Management
Oversees operational activities of staff working in the laboratory
Provides guidance and expert advice to staff on technical issues, safety procedures and regulatory compliance matters within the laboratory. Monitors operations to ensure compliance.
Provides development and performance feedback, counsel and guidance to the team
Ensures that new employees are appropriately trained and familiar with laboratory operational requirements
Ensures adequate staffing levels and support necessary for operation of the department, including facilitation of in-service and other educational programs
Scientific Operations and Management
Performs/supports activities to ensure test method life cycle management (documentation, method suitability/trending, maintenance, etc.).
Supports completion of analytical deliverables to meet project milestones.
Assists in the evaluation of new technologies/ improvements to support analytical expertise as required.
Reviews and evaluates data and formulates recommendations as needed.
Works with internal and external partners in support of collaborative projects.
Prepares and presents key documents as required.
Financial Operations
Tracks/manages expenditures against assigned budgets.
Advises management of significant budget deviations.
Assures that all laboratory financial operations comply with corporate requirements.
Reviews budget by integrating data from different projects, verifying that expenses have been correctly charged to different projects in compliance with requirements, making corrections as necessary
Regulatory/Quality Management
Ensures adherence to all applicable quality, corporate, safety, and regulatory requirements.
May serve as Subject matter Expert (SME) as required
Supports departmental quality by ensuring adequate support for documentation, investigation, and closure of quality items including change controls, deviations, and CAPAs
About You
PhD or equivalent +4 years’ experience, Master's degree +6 years’ experience, Bachelor's +9 years’ experience required, preferably in pharmaceutical or biotech setting. Degrees in scientific discipline preferred.
Strong understanding of and experience with GXP practices and procedures within research or lab setting
Experience with functional immunoassays required, however experience with serum bactericidal assays (SBAs) is strongly preferred
Experience with LIMS systems, reagent characterization, and qualification is required
Experience with Human Complement (HC) and Baby Rabbit Complement (BRC) is preferred
Proven leadership experience, including negotiation, change management, training, conflict resolution, etc. is needed for success in this role
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to create clear technical documentation and effectively liaise between different stakeholder groups
Creative problem-solving skills with ability to develop and implement innovative solutions
Goal-driven mindset with proven ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple deliverables
Strong analytical abilities with operational focus
Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
