Technology Solution Engineer

Role Overview 

The Technology Solution Engineer works with business and technology stakeholders to shape technical solutions, then builds them. This is a deliberately broad, hands-on role that combines consultative solution design with real delivery across the enterprise technology platforms. 

At this level, the Technology Solution Engineer owns solutions end to end. The role runs requirement workshops directly with business stakeholders, authors the design, makes independent technical decisions, and leads the build through to operational handover. Work spans the full platform estate rather than a single technology, and includes reviewing the work of others and mentoring less experienced engineers. 

The platforms in scope include cloud infrastructure on Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, integration, automation, APIs, containers, and web hosting. Platforms are run both as internal products and as managed services, so the role carries accountability for how solutions run as well as how they are built. 

Key Responsibilities 

Solution Consulting and Design 

• Engage business functions and technology stakeholders to understand objectives, constraints, and the problem behind the request. 

• Facilitate requirement and design workshops, and translate outcomes into clear technical solution designs. 

• Produce options analyses with honest trade-offs across cost, risk, delivery time, supportability, and strategic fit. 

• Author solution designs, architecture decision records, interface definitions, and non-functional requirements. 

Cross-Platform Solution Delivery 

• Design and build solutions spanning cloud infrastructure, integration, APIs, automation, containers, and web hosting. 

• Provision and configure platform services using Terraform, Ansible, and the approved Infrastructure as Code toolchain. 

• Develop supporting automation and tooling in Python, PowerShell, Bash, or another appropriate language. 

• Lead technical delivery of solutions involving multiple platforms and multiple contributing teams. 

Service Transition and Operational Ownership 

• Ensure solutions meet operational readiness criteria before production release, including monitoring, alerting, runbooks, backup, and recovery. 

• Instrument solutions for observability using Datadog, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Cribl, or Observe. 

• Own investigation and resolution of complex issues, root-cause analysis, and preventive corrective actions. 

Security, Compliance, and Risk 

• Design and build to enterprise security standards, applying identity and access patterns based on Entra ID, Okta, OAuth2, and least privilege. 

• Manage secrets and certificates through HashiCorp Vault, CyberArk, and cloud-native key services. 

• Identify and articulate technical risk, technical debt, and exceptions, with practical remediation proposals. 

Technical Craft and Engineering Practices 

• Write clean, tested, peer-reviewed code and configuration, managed in version control with trunk-based practices. 

• Review the work of other engineers and raise the standard of design and implementation across the team. 

• Use AI-assisted engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code to accelerate design, development, testing, and documentation, applying appropriate review and technical judgement. 

Collaboration and Ways of Working 

• Work within an agile team with a shared backlog, defined customers, and service-level objectives. 

• Act as a credible technical partner to business stakeholders, explaining trade-offs in plain language. 

• Coordinate across platform, cloud, integration, web, security, architecture, and operations teams. 

• Mentor less experienced engineers through pairing, review, and structured feedback. 

Qualifications 

Required 

• Demonstrated capability in solution engineering, platform engineering, or technical delivery

• Strong hands-on experience with at least one major public cloud, with practical exposure to a second. 

• Proven ability to own a solution end to end, from requirements through design, build, and operational handover. 

• Practical Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform, and configuration management with Ansible. 

• Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language such as Python, PowerShell, Bash, JavaScript, or Java. 

• Working knowledge across several of: containers and Kubernetes, integration and APIs, web hosting, networking, and identity. 

• Demonstrated ability to run workshops and engage business stakeholders directly. 

• Clear written and verbal communication in English, including presenting designs to technical and non-technical audiences. 

Preferred 

• Experience mentoring engineers or leading small technical workstreams. 

• Experience with OpenShift, Backstage or another developer portal, and GitOps tooling. 

• Experience with integration or API platforms such as MuleSoft, Kafka, Solace, or Kong. 

• Experience with web and application server technologies such as IIS, Tomcat, Apache, or Nginx. 

• Experience delivering within a validated, GxP, or otherwise regulated environment, including awareness of data-protection obligations such as GDPR. 

• Certifications such as AWS or Azure professional or expert level, Certified Kubernetes Administrator, HashiCorp Terraform Associate, ITIL, or an agile qualification. 

• A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information technology, or a related discipline.
